LEED® Project Certification: Hot Mix Asphalt
Hot mix asphalt (HMA) can qualify for LEED® points in several categories, depending on the individual asphalt mix chosen.

Sustainable Site Selection SSc6.1-6.2 - Stormwater Management
SS Credit 6.1 - Stormwater Design: Quality Control
Dense or porous asphalt pavement (porous paving = 3,000m2/day) can be constructed on a recharge bed to promote quality control by using a pervious/porous pavement structure. Potentially, site discharge and flow can be reduced below predevelopment conditions by transferring any water flow from roof drainage or stormwater runoff to the pavement recharge bed.
SS Credit 6.2 - Stormwater Design: Quality Control
Dense or porous asphalt pavement (porous paving = 3,000m2/day) can be constructed on a recharge bed to promote quality control by using a pervious/porous pavement structure. Data indicate that infiltration best management practices ( BMPs) have the highest pollutant removal efficiency for total phosphorous, soluble phosphorus, nitrate, zinc, and total suspended solids (TSS) compared with wetlands, wet ponds, filtering swales, and dry ponds.
SSc7.1 - Heat Island Effect, Nonroof
SS Credit 7.1 - Heat Island Effect, Nonroof
Asphalt can achieve this credit in two ways:
1) Porous asphalt surfacing to cover at least 50 percent of the parking area; or
2) Coating the asphalt surface to raise the Solar reflective Index (SRI)-coatings and/or synthetic binders of virtually any color are available to treat the asphalt pavement surface. [CE: Spell out SRI?]
Materials and Resources MRc2.1 and 2.2 - Construction Waste Management
MR Credits 2.1 - Divert 50 Percent From Disposal
MR Credits 2.2 - Divert 75 Percent From Disposal
Asphalt and asphalt pavements are 100 percent recyclable. Where the construction or major renovation requires the removal of an asphalt pavement, then 100 percent of this material can be reintroduced into the manufacturing process for recycling back into new asphalt and asphalt pavement.
MRc4.1 and 4.2 Recycled Content
MR Credits 4.1 - The sum of Postconsumer plus 50% of the post industrial content = 10%
MR Credits 4.2 - The sum of Postconsumer plus 50% of the post industrial content = 20%
A reduction in virgin aggregates is accomplished by incorporating recycled asphalt back into the "new" asphalt mix. Many U.S. DOT/Canadian province specifications allow up to 50 percent recycled asphalt to be added into "new" asphalt mixtures.
MRc5.1-5.2 Regional Materials
MR Credits 5.1 - 10 Percent Extracted, Processed, and Manufactured Regionally
MR Credits 5.2 - 20 Percent Extracted, Processed, and Manufactured Regionally
Asphalt and asphalt pavements use local sources for the primary constituent (aggregates).
Asphalt must be manufactured and placed into an asphalt pavement while hot; therefore, the material must be produced locally to the project site.
